Better Load Balancing: Real-Time Dynamic Subsetting
Better Load Balancing: Real-Time Dynamic Subsetting
Overview Subsetting is a common technique used in load balancing for large-scale distributed systems. In this blog post, we will briefly introduce Uber’s current service mesh architecture that has been powering thousands of critical microservices in Uber since 2016. We will then discuss the challenges we faced when trying to scale the number of tasks in the mesh and issues with our initial subsetting approach. We’ll finish with how we came up with the real-time dynamic subsetting solution and its results in production.   Dictionary Here are a few generic terms that we’ll be using throughout the article: A (micro)

WebReduce: A Journal of Geek Culture and Weirdness-at-Scale
Just one month ago, shortly before acquiring Twitter, Elon Musk polled his 92.5 million followers to see if they approved of this idea: Convert Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters to a homeless shelter since no one shows up anyway. Amazon founder/billionaire Jeff Bezos responded, suggesting Twitter could just devote a portion of its headquarters, like when […]

Don't Treat SQL Like a Programming or Scripting Language. - Brent Ozar Unlimited®
In a programming language like C# or Java, you tell the computer what to do, in order. Get the customers from California, then get their invoices, then sum the total. SQL, on the other hand, is a declarative language where you declare the shape of your result set: Get the total sales from Californian customers....
