A roadmap is just as important to an agile team as it is to a waterfall team. We'll talk about how to build an agile roadmap, how to use it, and evolve it.

Draper wins patent for electrostatic motor - eTransport News
Draper is developing a family of electric motors and generators based on fundamentally different principles from common e-motors used today. Underpinning the initiative is a recent patent on aspects of the technology. Draper says its approach to electric motors has numerous advantages over conventional electric motors, including lower weight, higher efficiency, higher specific power and

Key metrics for microservices architecture | Andrew Klotz
Effective monitoring for microservices requires an architecture that extends beyond the success rate of incoming HTTP requests. Coming from a web-centric point…
Service Meshes in the Cloud Native World – The New Stack
Microservices have taken center stage in the software industry. Transitioning from a monolith to a microservices-based architecture empowers companies to deploy their application more frequently, reliably, independently, and with scale without any hassle. This doesn't mean everything is green in Microservice architecture; there are some problems that need to be addressed, just like while designing…
Migration from Monolith to Feature Module – The New Stack
sponsored this post. The eBay Android application is now a decade old and contains hundreds of features and activity classes in monolithic modules. With the growth of the app in recent years, the code became increasingly harder to maintain. In order to scale — both in features and development — we had to further modularize…
Great ID Student Work: "Rotate" Concept for an Ergonomic Restaurant Cart - Core77
I spent much of high school and college working as a waiter, and have rarely seen products designed specifically to make a server's work easier. (One notable exception is this ketchup-marrying gem.) So this ID student project, by Wang Yuwei and Wu Xuanqi from the Department of Industrial Design at
We have a house in the northeast United States where the summers are warm and the winters are cold. We have solar on the roof and we heat and cool this house with electricity. This is the electrical generation/consumption chart for all of 2020 for that house: We produce almost all of the heating and […]

Experiment on your code freely with Git worktree | Opensource.com
Git is designed in part to enable experimentation. Once you know that your work is safely being tracked and safe states exist for you to fall back upon if something goes horribly wrong, you're not afraid to try new ideas. Part of the price of innovation, though, is that you're likely to make a mess along the way. Files get renamed, moved, removed, changed, and cut into pieces. New files are introduced. Temporary files that you don't intend to track take up residence in your working directory.
The Rabbit Hole: The Definitive Developer's Podcast: 201. Metrics as Incentives
Many managers assess developer performance as if they were runners, where how many lines of code you write determines how good you are. Instead, developers are like baseball players, where a suite of metrics is needed to measure performance. In today’s episode, we unpack how metrics are used to judge coding performance and how metric incentives can create less than desirable coding behaviors. After chatting about how vaccine eligibility metrics can incentivize binge eating, we chat about the ins-and-outs of using test coverage to measure project health. We then discuss how managers are weighing their team’s efforts in the age of remote work. While reflecting on when it can be useful to look at how many lines of code someone has written, we explore how incentivizing individual performance can damage a team project. Later, we share some of our successes with AB testing. Using metrics as incentives can lead to both positive and negative unintended consequences. Join us to hear about how these knock-on effects can impact your work.

Joe Biden’s infrastructure plan takes inspiration from the massive public works effort that helped shape the Emerald City, and America, for generations.
Most beginners in programming eventually end up with the same ingratiating message: „Programming is easy, everyone can do it”, with some threatening message that people doing the gatekeeping should stop doing that. I’m here to tell you that that is not true. Programming is hard, programming is not for everyone, and for the time being everyone might be able to do it, but most definitely most should not. Like most of the empty, shallow, positive messages coming with an automatic defense against refute, in this case talking about this gatekeeping thing that simply doesn’t happen.
